27 Jul Meet the Choreographers Behind Shall We Dance
Shall We Dance is a Durban dance phenomenon! A home-grown dance show now in its 24th season, each year the production grows in scale and quality – in no small part due to the strength of direction and choreography provided by some of Durban’s most well-known dance choreographers – Neville Letard, Caryl Cusens and Ryan Yunnie.
Formerly the principal of the Dudley Andrews Dance Studio in Durban, Neville now follows his passion – taking ballroom dance into KwaZulu-Natal schools, and delighting in watching learners grow into competent social and competitive dancers. In between this, and his duties as Chair of SADTA KZN, Neville is kept busy as choreographer for Shall We Dance’s ballroom group.
Besides choreography and teaching, Neville – who holds a Doctorate cum laude in Dance from the University of KwaZulu-Natal – adjudicates dance competitions, and enjoys any opportunity to travel to dance competitions both in South Africa and overseas.
Caryl stepped into a choreography role for Shall We Dance in 2013, along with her Ritz ‘n Rhythm line dancers, pulled from dance studios all around the greater Durban area.
Along with her background as former competitive ballroom and Latin dancer, her experience in music and the media put her in good stead as a director of this spectacular dance show.
As the Vice Chair of SADTA KZN, Caryl divides her time between teaching, coaching and adjudicating dance, and examining candidates for dance teachers’ exams, at both regional and national level.
Ryan has been part of the Shall We Dance family since the show’s inception, having first performed as Bart Simpson over twenty years ago.
An accomplished Latin American and ballroom dancer, Ryan graced both the stage and competition floors, and is now a seasoned coach and choreographer, and principal of Dance Basics Studio in Durban. Also a dance coach at the studio is Janelle Yunnie – SADTA KZN Branch Secretary, and Ryan’s better half.
In addition to social and competitive dance coaching, the Yunnies also offer wedding and corporate entertainment. Close to their heart – instructing disabled dancers in social and competitive dancing.

Shall We Dance runs from 9-17th September at The Opera Theatre at The Playhouse, Durban. Get your tickets here…
