Shall We Dance is honoured to host the exhibition dance debut of South African superstar dancer Ryan Hammond and his new dance partner Angelique Allison. Read on to find out more about this terrific twosome…
What is Exhibition Dance?
Exhibition dance is and exciting new form of dance which incorporates standardised steps and techniques, with a gymnastic element – and the Hammond-Allison pairing are set to sizzle the stage with their exhibition dance routine!
When they met back in 2014, Hammond and Allison were contracted in separate tours, but realized they loved working together enough to become professional partners. They haven’t looked back, performing Latin show dance demonstrations at corporate and theatre events around South Africa, and have decided to take on the challenge of exhibition dancing this year – debuting their act at Shall We Dance.
If you’re a fan of TV’s Strictly Come Dancing, then you probably recognize this man’s face…born into a dancing family, he started dancing at seven years of age, setting the course for his future career as a professional dancer and TV celebrity. After turning pro in 2006, and touring South Africa and the UK, he went on to become the three times British Show Dance Champion, and made it to the live semi-finals of Sky TV’s Got to Dance. Next came a stint on Strictly Come Dancing – he won the SA version of the hit TV show in 2013 – and shortly thereafter he and then dance partner Lindsey Muckle joined Russian pro dancer Pasha Kovalev and his partner Katya Virshilas in a whirlwind dance tour around the UK, performing 75 shows in four months.
In addition to an extremely full career as a dancer, specializing in Latin Dance, Hammond is also a qualified IDTA Freestyle and Latin American instructor and adjudicator.
She started dancing at the age of four, and has had a passion for dance ever since! Although interested in Freestyle dance as a youngster, she was later accepted into a performing arts school, Pro Arte Alphen Park, which shifted her focus to ballet, Spanish and jazz dance. During her dance schooling, she was a company member of the Youth Ballet Company of Tshwane, and performed an extensive ballet repertoire in her time there, including The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty and Coppelia, in which she danced the lead.
More recently, Allison has focused on her work in the fitness industry, just completing an eight-month contract for travel companies the World of TUI and TUI Magic Life as a dancer and Zumba/fitness instructor, where she gained experience in all group fitness classes including step, aerobics and Pilates. She’s thrilled to be working with Ryan Hammond on creating an exciting new dance entertainment routine to be performed internationally.
